Police have succeeded to arrest seven persons involved in the murder of the chairman of the Federation of Contractors’ Associations of Nepal (FCAN) Sharad Kumar Gauchan. Five of them, including the shooter, were made public on November 14 while two more were arrested from Kapan on November 17. However, the police said the mastermind of the murder is still at large.
The arrestees are Rajiv Syangtyang of Panchakanya Rural Municipality, Nuwakot; Shivaji Mahato of Parsa, Mukesh Kumar Pandey of Bihar, India; Santosh Gurung of Thori, Parsa and Prakash Budhathoki.
Mahato had arranged firearms while Gurung had managed the motorbike that was used in the crime. The motorcycle was brought from India. According to police, Gauchan was murdered after he refused to pay extortion money.
The mastermind of the crime is Samirman Singh Basnet. Basnet and his partners Manoj Pun, Lopsang Lama, Ganga Lingden, Shyam Bahadur Gumbe, Amar Bahadur Lama, Roshan Budhathoki and Ajay Thapa are on the run. Lama and Gumbe had deserted the Nepal Army.
Syangtyang had opened fire on Gauchan.
The two arrested on November 17 were identified as Basanta Thebe and Dhanraj Yonghang. They were accused of informing the shooters as Gauchan stepped out of his house and in aiding to hide the weapons used during the shootout. The police also recovered two pistols and 10 rounds of bullets from Thebe and Yonghang.
Gauchan, was murdered on October 9 at Prayag Marg near Shanti Nagar while he was on his way to the FCAN office in Anamnagar in his vehicle.
The police have managed to arrest seven of the several individuals involved in Gauchan’s murder in about one-and- half-month after his killing.
The police had formed a committee under DIG Ganesh KC, to investigate into the heinous crime.
The police surely deserve appreciation for its success to indentify the murderers and arrest seven of them.
