Prof. P. Kharel, columnist of People’s Review weekly, on November 18 received Dr. Yadav Prasad Pant Journalism Prize for his more than four decades of contributions to journalism as an active journalist and media educator. The prize instituted by Dr. Pant. Yadav Prasad Pant Research & Development Foundation includes a citation appreciating Kharel’s career and contributions plus a cash award of Rs 25,001.
Veteran journalist Bhairab Risal and former minister Mahesh Acharya were also honoured at the function. Tulasa Paudyal, the president of Women’s Empowerment Organization, based in Sarlahi district, received cash award and citation-letter on behalf of her institute in the presence of noted economists, university professors, writers, journalists and a cross-section of society.
Former editor in chief of The Rising Nepal and Sunday Despatch, Prof. Kharel, who has written more than 3,000 articles in various dailies, weeklies and other periodicals since the early 1970s, has written more 20 books to his credit, including Political Communication and Media for Democracy. He is currently working on Nepali political landscape covering the first 25 years since the ushering in of democracy in 1951. Recipient of Bhushan Journalism Prize in 1999, he received Madan Bhandari Journalism Award in 2016 and the Gorkhapatra National Journalism Award last spring.
Dr. Pant, a highly respected economist, served as a Tribhuvan University Professor, finance secretary, National Planning Commission member, governor of Nepal Rastra Bank, finance minister and ambassador, among other positions. Tribhuvan University prescribed his books in the higher education for Economics students.
