Internal disputes make NC functionless

Factionalism and groupism have virtually made the Nepali Congress, the oldest democratic party of Nepal, completely functionless.
The party had to brace even to hold its central working committee meeting owing to differences among the leaders of three separate factions.
The party on Sunday failed to hold its CWC owing to the difference as the factions led by Ram Chandra Poudel and Krishna Prasad Sitaula threatened to boycott the CWC meeting. However, on Monday evening, the CWC sat and formed its five-member disciplinary committee led by Panchthar’s Bhishma Raj Angdembe. But the leadership had to hold marathon meeting to ensure Monday’s meeting.
The present dispute surfaced when party President Deuba made amendment to its statute by completely ignoring the decision of the party’s Mahasamiti meeting that everyone in the CWC should be elected from the grassroots. His decision ignited the anger. Majority of the district chairs of the party had already warned of calling early general convention if the party chief did not correct his mistake.
Of course, the undemocratic and controversial moves taken by party president Deuba has made NC not only unpopular among the people but also bred groupism within the party.
The latest case was his controversial views on the restriction imposed by the government on Biplav-led party. In the beginning he welcomed the move, but later he criticised it.
“Nepali Congress will not get a new lease of life unless the party is freed from Deuba and his men,” said a senior NC leader.
In the name of consolidating power, Deuba has been taking one unpopular decision after another for the last two years, and he has not given up his habit. As a result, the party has virtually become ineffective in all fronts.
Had Deuba been a morally powerful leader, he would have stepped down following the humiliating defeat of the party in 2017 polls.
Therefore, the senior leader looks correct to say that the party will not become effective under Deuba’s leadership.
