Nepali Congress’s central member Dr. Shekhar Koirala has challenged party president Sher Bahadur Deuba’s leadership and announced he would be contesting for the post of party chief in its 14th general convention.
Speaking in Udayapur on Monday, he said that the existence of the party would be at stake if its general convention was not held by mid-April next year.
Central member of NC Koirala said that the decisions of the Mahasamiti meeting were revoked after the central leadership feared that the next general convention of the party would change its leadership.
Stating that the central committee could not be a body above the Mahasamiti, Koirala said revoking the decisions of the Mahasamiti was not only against the statute of the party but also a ploy not to hold the 14thgeneral convention of the party in time.
“Whenever the party was in crisis, BP Koirala used to go to village. But these days the party leaders go to Kathmandu when the party is in crisis.”
He also accused the leadership for promoting groupism in the party.
“I am firmly in favour of change in the central leadership as the current leadership cannot take the party out of the crisis,” Koirala stated.
He further said that the party was in the weakest condition in its history due to the inaction of the leadership.
Koirala, who has been in the district tour for long, stated that the party cadres across the country were pressing him to fight for the post of the party president in the next general convention.
