Doctors working in government hospitals have launched a protest for not inserting a provision to transfer them from local or provincial level to the Federal level while adjusting them in three levels of the government.
Hundreds of poor patients who cannot afford to receive treatment at the private hospitals were stranded at different hospitals for the past few days due to the strike.
The agitating doctors have been demanding that all doctors should be managed by the Federal Government and the Federal Government should mobilise them in the local and province levels.
They said the government did not seem serious towards ending the plight of the patients and addressing the genuine problems raised by the doctors.
They accused the Ministry of Health and Population of not being ready to discuss the concerns of the agitating doctors.
Earlier last month, the government doctors had postponed their protest programmes after Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli asked for some time to address their grievances. They resorted to the protest after the deadline sought by Oli expired last Monday.
Issuing a statement on Saturday, the association of the government doctors advised the doctors to reject the government’s integration paper. Over 1,400 doctors work in government health facilities across the country.
Meanwhile, the government made it clear that it would not address the demands of doctors.
Advisor of Upendra Yadav, Deputy Prime Minister, Health and Population Ministry, Dr. K.K. Rai said on Tuesday that the Ministry could not address the demands of the agitating government doctors.
Advisor Rai termed the demands meaningless.
Similarly, spokesperson at the Ministry Mahendra Prasad Shrestha said that the Ministry was in no position to strike a deal with the agitating doctors on the negotiation table.
However, chairman of the Government Doctors’ Association of Nepal Dr. Dipendra Pandey said that since the doctors’ demands were legitimate, the government must fulfill them.
