U Thant’s statue in Lumbini

  • Kathmandu, 18 May:  A statue of former UN Secretary-General, U Thant, has been erected in Lumbini which was unveiled amid a function on Friday.

    U Thant, a Burmese diplomat and the third Secretary-General of the United Nations serving from 1961 to 1971, had played a significant role on the negotiation between then U.S. President John F. Kennedy and Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev during the Cuban Missile Crisis (1962), thereby helping to avoid an imminent turmoil.

    The statue was constructed in the premise of Lumbini Information Centre. It was jointly unveiled by Lila Giri, Minister of Province-5, Lumbini Development Trust Vice Chairman Bhikshu Metteya, Lumbini Buddhist University Vice Chancellor Hridaya Ratna Bajracharya and grandson of U Thant Dr Thant Myunta

    Thant had visited Lumbini when he was the UN Secretary-General. He was for the greater development of Lumbini.
