Hurdles on Nepali agro-exports to India

  • Published on: July 9, 2019

  • The Nepal government has decided to allow import of Indian vegetables without any quarantine checks, but the Nepali exporters are facing hurdles from the Indian side while exporting Nepali herbs and agro-products in the Indian markets. The Indian authorities in Nepal-India borders asks the traders to produce a quarantine certificate from India, thus they have to travel to different cities by spending a minimum of two weeks to get permission to export such products in the Indian markets. However, in imports of the Indian products, the government has allowed the Indians to export their products to Nepal without any hurdles.Specially, the Nepali farmers have suffered a lot from the Indian agro-products as the Indian farmers get government subsidy and comparatively the Indian agro-products are cheaper in the market here so that the Nepali farmers cannot compete with the lower priced imported vegetables. Perhaps, this could be PM Oli’s journey towards prosperity!
