Kathmandu, 16 July: Lawmakers of the major opposition Nepali Congress have decided to provide their five days’ salary to the people affected by the landside, floods and inundations occurred in various parts of the country. The parliamentary party of the NC on Monday urged all to extend support to the disaster hit people from their sides at this hour of grief.
Issuing a press statement, the NC expressed deep grief to those losing lives in the disaster; extended condolences to the families of the victims; and wished the speedy recovery of injured ones.
As many as 62 persons have lost their lives in the landslides, floods and inundations in various districts, while many went missing, hundreds got injury and thousands severely affected owing to the torrential rainfall. In the wake of the obstruction of major highways, loss of huge properties as houses, lands, crops and cattle, a serious discussion was needed in the parliament relating to the disaster management, preparedness, rescue and rehabilitation, the NC stressed.
The NC accused the ruling party of not becoming positive to hold discussion on disaster management as the urgent issue of importance at Monday’s meeting of the House of Representatives by postponing other agenda. “Government must be committed to this pressing issue by listening to the lawmakers’ views. It is worrying that government was not ready to face parliament discussion on disaster preparedness, rescue, rehabilitation and relief distribution,” said the press release issued by NC Chief Whip Balkrishna Khand.
