This week the nation remembered two leaders late B. P. Koirala and Pushpalal by marking their death anniversary.
The Nepali Congress marked the 39th B. P. Memorial Day on Monday by organising various programmes across the country while the ruling Nepal Communist Party observed Pushpalal Memorial Day on Tuesday.
However, the functions turned out to be no more than rituals. The leaders of the Nepali Congress that has almost abandoned B P Koirala’s thoughts argued that they should follow his thoughts. From party president Sher Bahadur Deuba to senior leader Kul Bahadur Gurung said that BP thoughts were still relevant in Nepal’s politics.
Gurung, who has been launching a campaign to revive BP’s thoughts accused other leaders of the party deviating from the principles of late Koirala in a bid to reach power.
Similarly, the NCP leaders reached Champa Devi in Kirtipur to pay tributes to late Pushpalal. However, Prime Minister KP Oli did not attend the function. Other heavyweight leaders, including Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Madhav Nepal and Jhalanath Khanal attended the function.
Koirala had founded the Nepali Congress and led the epoch-making political change of 2007 BS. He was the first people-elected Prime Minister of Nepal.
Likewise, Pushpalal founded the communist party in Nepal. But he never enjoyed power. Instead he was termed as a traitor by other communist leaders, including many who attended the function of Tuesday.
