Kashmir blues

  • Published on: August 14, 2019

  • The BJP government led by Narendra Modi has abducted the fundamental rights of the Kashmiri people by removing the Article 370 and 35 (a) of the Indian constitution. The Article had guaranteed Kashmir’s autonomy along with special privilege to the Kashmiri people. The Kashmiri people were enjoying their own constitution, own flag and autonomy, even though, they had been demanding for an independent nation status for the last seven decades. The Kashmiris fought the war for freedom and around one hundred thousand Kashmiris have sacrificed their lives as the Indian security force intended to suppress the agitators in an inhuman manner. Thousands have been disabled, most of them have even lost their eye-sights, there are many incidents of how women folks were raped and serious violation of human rights was witnessed in the disputed area.
The appropriate and democratic way for peaceful resolution of the Kashmir issue was considered as a plebiscite, but when the Indian establishment saw the possibility of a negative result from the plebiscite, the Indian government, which claims to be the largest democracy, didn’t choose this electoral option in which the people could decide their own fate.
India had annexed Sikkim, another independent country in the region, through a referendum. Although the impartiality of the Sikkim referendum has been questioned as several authors have written books and many witnesses have explained how the Indian officials had conducted the referendum one-sidedly in Sikkim.
With the present move, the Indian government has decided to suppress the voice of the Kashmiri people by using the army.
Already there has been an excessive presence of the Indian military force in that area, the press is not allowed to enter in the disputed area. However, the BBC had telecast some footages of the locals’ demonstration after the Indian government lifted curfew on Friday afternoon.
Modi’s historical victory?: The Modi government’s present move is being watched with suspicion within India itself. Some observers have suspected whether the Modi government has Indianized Kashmir or India is going to be Kashmirized! Presently, the Kashmiri people are under surveillance of the heavily armed Indian forces. There is no internet, nor, telephone connection and local leaders are under house arrest, how the Kashmiri people will react to the Indian government’s recent move, it is not clear. Except Pakistan, no other country has strongly opposed the Indian move. The international community is eying on the bigger Indian market instead of speaking on behalf of the Kashmiri people; neighbouring countries Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Maldives have described it as an internal affair of India, China has expressed her concern on Laddakh, it has spoken nothing about Kashmir. Nepal, currently the chair of the SAARC, has remained silent or say Nepal has wished to express a silent support to India.
Odd silence: Neither the ruling party nor the opposition parties in Nepal have denounced the Indian act on Kashmir. However, some leaders of the small Left political parties and also some intellectuals have expressed serious concern about the violation of human rights, democracy and individual rights of the Kashmiri people granted by the Indian constitution, there has been seen a pin-drop silence in Nepal on the Kashmir issue. The Nepali Congress has already stated that it was India’s internal affair. The government of the Nepal Communist Party enjoying virtually two thirds majority has made no reaction. Earlier, on Venezuela, the party’s co-chairman Pushpakamal Dahal Prachanda had not only spoken for once but repeatedly about the party’s stance against expansionist elements in Venezuela. However, on the Kashmir issue, the “revolutionary” co-chairman Prahcnada has remained silent.
Nepali citizens are also residing in Jammu and Kashmir area. How is the situation of these Nepalis, on this also, the Nepal government has remained silent.
Certainly, Indian PM Narendra Modi and his party BJP could have been encouraged from the passive role of the international community against the Modi government’s move in Kashmir. Such an encouragement may lead India to move towards the path of expansionism by giving threats to the smaller nations in the region.
To recall, the then PM Indira Gandhi had planned to split Nepal and annex the tarai territory immediately after annexation of Sikkim, an independent nation. Gandhi had even assigned a RAW officer for this job, which has been disclosed by the then RAW officers.
There is definitely some Indian interest behind the permanent political instability in Nepal and there was Indian association in every political turmoil in Nepal. The Indians had even supported the terrorist declared Maoists to conduct insurgency in Nepal. The politics of “one Madhesh one Pradesh” is solely influenced from the Indian interests.
While analyzing these covert activities of India, Nepal is under serious threat from India in safeguarding Nepal’s territory, independence and sovereignty as well.
