Manoj Pariyar’s contribution to Nepali music

By Mohan Panta

Manoj Pariyar, hailing from Bhoteodar in Lamjung, exhibited a fervent interest in music and technology since his early years. The radio had a profound impact on him, particularly in the village context of that time. He would tinker with faulty radios, not knowing how they worked, still managing to get them to play by knocking on them. He would experiment with presenting the radio’s tunes in diverse ways, such as playing it inside an empty earthen pot or a container of rice, relishing the variations in the sound.

It has been discovered that the musical ambience of the Nepali traditional song and dance Rattyuli, marriage, Bratabandha ceremonies, and other such events held in village households captivated Manoj’s interest in music. He would experiment with and enjoy the sounds emanating from Madal, Dholak, Radio, etc. in various ways, blending them since his early days and presenting them in novel ways, thereby entertaining his audience with his unique sounds.

In 2068 A.D., Manoj Pariyar left his hometown Lamjung to pursue a career in the music industry in Kathmandu. He began his journey by joining the Kathmandu Digital Studio, where he initially served as an assistant to the celebrated senior recordist and sound editor, Dika Gurung. It was during this time that his passion for sound mixing started to deepen. After dedicating himself tirelessly to his craft for approximately two years, he succeeded in carving out a name for himself as a skilled sound editor.

The song that catapulted Pariyar to fame as a sound editor was “RAAG MITHO”, featuring the mellifluous voice of popular singer Melina Rai. It was his first foray into editing a song, and it was an instant hit at the time. Since then, Pariyar has gone on to work on over 700 plus songs, in addition to contributing to half a dozen films, short films, and other projects as a sound editor. Pariyar’s most recent film project was director Madhab Raj Kharel’s “CHITTHI”. He has also made significant contributions to numerous famous songs as a sound editor, such as “JALJALA” by renowned singers Kulendra B.K. and Sunita Buddha, “JOVAN” by Basant Thapa and Samikshya Adhikari, “NAYA GALBANDI” by Sunny Bishwakarma and Devika KC, “NIRMAYA THULI” Swarop Raj Acharya and Laxmi Malla, “PAPKI PARI”, “ITIHAAS”, “BUJHIDEU”, “RAJRANI”, “PARANBHANDA PYARO”, “BALUMAI”, “PATLI PART THREE”, and many more.

His impeccable work as a sound editor has garnered him several awards, including the “NIM AWARD -2022” for his contribution to “NAYA GALBANDI”, the “JYOTI MUSIC AWARD” (2077) for “BADMAASH”, the “GENIUS MUSIC AWARD” (2076) for “BUJHIDEU”, and the QUALITY ENTERTAINMENT AWARD (2078) for “BAJAI BAJAI”.

Pariyar’s exceptional work as a sound editor has been recognized with numerous awards and titles. He was bestowed with the prestigious “Tarakeshwar National Personality and Art Maker Award, 2079” by the Honorable Vice-President of Nepal for his outstanding contribution to the field of sound editing.

In addition, various art, culture, and music associations have also honored him for his contribution to sound mixing.
