Cultivation of marijuana for medicinal purposes only: Minister of Finance

Kathmandu, 13 June: Finance Minister Dr Prakasharan Mahat said that the budget has been allocated to study how and in which model cannabis cultivation can be done. He said this while answering questions on the budget in the House of Representatives meeting on Monday.

“Let’s study how cannabis cultivation can be possible so that we can be serious about it. It is not meant to cultivate it immediately, it is not meant to be started from tomorrow,” he said.

The study will be conducted for the modality of its cultivation, Mahat said.

Right now, we are only to study cultivating cannabis for medicinal purposes only, he informed.

He emphasized that when other countries are taking advantage of this, we should not stay here carrying the old mentality.

He said that other countries that had previously banned cannabis cultivation are now doing ‘big business’.

Yesterday, the countries that had warned us for stopping grants if cultivated cannabis and we stopped its cultivation.

“But now the very countries doing big business by opening it for medicinal purposes. They are taking advantage of it”, he said.
