Floods, landslides claim lives in Eastern Nepal

Kathmandu, 18 June: At the beginning of this year’s monsoon, Eastern Nepal has been hit by floods and landslides. After incessant rains in various districts of eastern Nepal last night, floods and landslides occurred, so far one person has died and two dozen more are missing. Floods and landslides have also affected traffic on roads including the Mechi highway.

16 people have gone missing due to the flood in the Hewa River of Sankhuwasabha. The District Police Office, Sankhuwasabha informed that 16 laborers working on the hydropower project under construction in Hewa River located in Chainpur Municipality-4 were swept away by the flood after incessant rain. Three people have been rescued. One person died in Panchkhapan Municipality-5 of Sankhuwasabha.

On the other hand, five people have gone missing in Panchthar due to the flood that came with incessant rain.

Among the missing persons are Dilkumar Tamang of Hillihang-7 and Sanjog Lowa of Fidim -10 working on the Hewa-1 hydropower project, Ashish and Elisa Majhi who were operating a bottle house in Fidim -4 Majhitar and one person from Fidim-4 Hewakhola.

Shakti Kerung, the ward president, informed that the girl who was swept away by a landslide in Falelung 3 Kholaghari Sepi was rescued safely. The rain has also swept away the Hewakhola bridge connecting Fidim Municipality-4 and Hilihang Rural Municipality-7 in the Panchthar District on the Mechi highway.

Hari Khatiwada, Deputy Superintendent of Police, District Police Office, Panchthar, said that the Mechi Highway was completely blocked after the bridge was washed away. Tamor Corridor’s ‘Bailey Bridge’ has been washed away. Locals have said that houses were swept away in Yangwarak Rural Municipality-3 and 2. Similarly, District Police Office Panchthar informed that a motorable bridge was washed away in Phalelung Rural Municipality-3 Macchebung.

Moreover, Three members of one family are missing after a landslide swept away their house in Mehele in the Sidingwa Rural Municipality of Taplejung. According to the local Kamal Kadaria, Yadav’s wife Bhagimaya, daughter-in-law Sandhya and grandson Prajwal are missing after the mudslide washed away Yadav Budhathoki’s house. Bharat Tamang from Mehele is also missing. It is said that Tamang, who has a house by the river, went missing after moving his parents to a safer area after heavy rains.
